IMPORTANT NOTES
Liver: Although rare atorvastatin can cause liver damage and decrease liver function. Do not take this medication if you have active liver disease or abnormal liver function tests. Grapefruit Juice: Drinking grapefruit juice can increase the levels of atorvastatin in your body and may cause side effects. If you drink grapefruit juice regularly ask your doctor or pharmacist if you need to change your diet.
Cardiovascular Problems: There is an increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke if treatment with atorvastatin is started within 6 months of a stroke or TIA. Diet: Atorvastatin is not to be used alone to lower cholesterol. You should follow a cholesterol lowering diet and exercise program before starting and during treatment with this medication.
Hypersensitivity Syndrome: Some people have experienced a serious allergic reaction called hypersensitivity syndrome after taking medications in the same class as atorvastatin. If you develop symptoms of a serious allergic reaction seek medical attention immediately: fever, swollen lymph nodes, yellowing of the skin or eyes, flu like symptoms, rash or blisters.
Pregnancy: Cholesterol is needed for the normal development of the unborn child. Taking atorvastatin during pregnancy will reduce the amount of cholesterol available for the developing baby and may harm the baby. Pregnant women should not use atorvastatin. If you become pregnant while taking this medication stop taking it and call your doctor.
Breastfeeding: It is not known if atorvastatin is excreted in breast milk. If you are breastfeeding and taking this medication your baby may be at risk. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breastfeeding.
Children: This medication is not commonly used in children. Atorvastatin has only been studied in children 10 to 17 years of age with a genetic form of high cholesterol (familial hypercholesterolemia).
